Romeo & Juliet – Poster

For this project we were tasked to create a poster for a theatrical production of this Shakespearean play at the Twilight Theatre in Brighton. Only the text was provided and all other elements were to be designed and created on our own. Balance and composition concepts were keep in mind along with appropriate use of color.
The process taken in creating this layout started with thinking abstractly. Ideas and designs were researched in the Russian Constructivism style. Doing an off-center angled design brought a dynamic feel to the design. Incorporating the heart in the negative space of the 'm' and using the point of the spear shape to imply the dagger, gives the viewer a puzzle to figure out. Using a grid and thinking about the golden section helped to realign elements into an exact design. The choice of colors convey an emotional response with a sharp, contrasting and vibrant message.
Poster sketches
All sketches display balance and tension. Behind each one it is evident that a story is present. Additionally all of the visual information is not shown literally. In the selected sketch (right), the viewer puts together that the ‘m’ is created by the heart and in another (middle) you can see that the black areas on the bottom and top are silhouettes. Lastly, the r and j (left) form an abstract heart.
